Key limes are native to Southeast Asia, but after Spanish explorers introduced the fruit to the Florida Keys in the 1500s, it was found to flourish in the humid climate. Now the tangy fruit grows quite abundantly throughout the area, and the English name "key lime" is actually derived from its overwhelming presence in the area. As such, Floridians take their limes quite seriously. In 1965, Florida State Representative Benie Papy Jr. introduced legislation calling for a hefty fine to be levied against anyone advertising key lime pie that hadn’t been made with actual key limes. Although that bill did not pass, the Florida State Legislature formally effected key lime pie as the "Official Pie of the State of Florida" in 2006.
