"The Smurfs" started out as a Belgian comic, created by an artist who went by the pen-name Peyo. Its original title was "Les Schtroumpfs," and –- you guessed it –- our little blue friends all spoke French. Très intéressant, oui? The term came about during a meal Peyo was sharing with a friend, where he accidentally forgot the word for salt and asked the man to pass the schtroumpf. His good-humored friend jokingly replied, "Here's the Schtroumpf—when you are done schtroumpfing, schtroumpf it back..." Thus the name and accompanying language was born.
We now know these friendly blue creatures by the Dutch translation of that name, The Smurfs.
