The Kennedy half dollar was first released in April 1964, but it vanished from circulation with extraordinary speed thanks to hoarders, collectors, and patriots interested in a memento of the late president. Though the U.S. Mint greatly increased production, the denomination still failed to circulate. Even reducing the percentage of silver per coin from 90% to 40% didn’t do the trick -- it was just too popular a collector’s item!
