Legend has it that George Washington, before becoming a successful general and the first president of the United States, was once a child. Legend also has it that in George’s time, there wasn’t much to do for fun, so kids were allowed to wander around with axes, unsupervised. And one day, as he was doing just that, little Georgie decided to chop down his father’s prized cherry tree.
His father was outraged by the destruction of his tree, but little Washington (we’re guessing with a face smeared in cherry juice, and hiding an axe behind his back), immediately fessed up to the crime. He accompanied his apology with the famous line, "You know I cannot tell a lie!" Appreciating the honesty, his dad immediately forgave him.
