The formula for the mixture that makes up the deliciously crunchy center of a malt ball was first developed by James and William Horlick in 1873, and it was designed to be an improved nutritional supplement for infants and invalids. However, the brothers quickly discovered that their new treat had found a niche in unexpected markets -- explorers appreciated its lightweight, nonperishable and nourishing qualities, taking malted milk on treks, and ice cream makers appreciated its intriguingly unique flavor and started mixing it into milkshakes, creating a scrumptious beverage to be enjoyed by people of any age! The tasty treat became such a success that in 1939, the first incarnation of the malted milk ball appeared, and it would only take a few more years until the crunchy, chocolaty new treats would earn their illustrious name -- "Whoppers."
