Since their rainbow of colors first hit the candy scene in 1941, M&M candies have been one of the most widely recognized and adored confections in the world. Inspired by what he saw British soldiers toting around in the Spanish Civil War, Forrest Mars, Sr., son of the Mars Company founder, developed a patent for a candy-making process using the hard panning method to encase small chocolates in a shell that would protect them from melting. Because the Hershey’s Company had control over that era’s chocolate rationing, and the Mars company needed chocolate to manufacture their new candy, Hershey’s gained a 20 percent share of M&Ms, and the candy brand name represented the names of both Mr. Mars Sr. and Bruce Murrie, the son of Hershey’s president. Later, as the popularity of the candies grew, Mars bought out Hershey’s share and made the treat using their own chocolate.

This “melts in your mouth, not in your hand” candy is a global sensation available in over 100 countries and a vast array of vibrant colors and flavors. Originally made with a chocolate center, and then peanut, some of the other M&M candy varieties that have made appearances in the marketplace include white chocolate, caramel, raspberry, coffee, pretzel, jalapeno, and yes, even pumpkin spice! M & M candy colors are just as varied, with everything from the classic original bright shades to all-white or silver wedding candies, pink and blue baby shower/reveal candies, as well as orange and black for Halloween and several shades of green and red for Christmas.
