History of Dubble Bubble Gum

Dubble Bubble was created in 1928 by accident after Walter Diemer, an accountant at the Fleer Chewing Gum Company, came up with an innovative recipe that produced a gum which proved to be less sticky, easier to chew and more capable of producing bubbles than previous formulations. This original recipe was almost lost forever, as Diemer forgot to write it down and spent months attempting to recreate his first concoction! Because the only coloring on hand at the factory was pink, that became the new product’s color, which set the stage for this type of gum from that point forward! This new sensation hit the market and became instantly popular, with Fleer selling 1.5 million dollars of product in the first year. In 1998, the company was acquired by Concord Confections, and changed hands again in 2003 when Tootsie Roll Industries made this bubble-blowing delight part of their lineup!

Dubble Bubble Fun Facts

Known as the world’s first bubble gum, this invention came to be after an earlier product fell flat when it hit the commercial market. The very first creation developed by Fleer Company appeared in 1906 and was marketed under the name Blibber-Blubber. This product soon turned out to be a blubbering mess as it was extremely sticky and fell apart quickly, failing miserably among consumers. It took an accountant tinkering around with recipes in his spare time to come up with what would be heralded by historians as the original! Although gum production was halted during World War II due to sugar shortages, soon after resuming production in 1951, Fleer innovated the industry again with the introduction of the Dubble Bubble gumball, which, along with the original, is an all-time American favorite!
