DOTS

History of DOTS

DOTS gumdrop candy comes in a mix of flavors including cherry, strawberry, lemon, lime, and orange. It was introduced in 1945 by the Mason Company, however, that’s not the first time these chewy dome-shaped treats hit the market. In the late 1800s, the very first version ever created was a licorice-flavored delight named Crows, and it is known as the oldest product in the DOTS family! Urban legend says that the real name of these early confections was supposed to be Black Rose, and it was misnamed due to a printing error. But because the licorice candy was copyrighted before they were available in a wrapped form, this tale of two names may be just a rumor. Currently produced by Tootsie Roll Industries, these icons in history are still available in their original flavors, so every box is like a trip down memory lane!

DOTS Fun Facts

This vegan candy is produced at a rate of over 4 billion a year, making it one of America’s number one brands. Over the years, different varieties have popped up, including cinnamon, green tea, pomegranate, and wild berry. But each attempt at reinvention resulted in the company reverting to the tried and true tastes customers love. Although DOTS flavors are different, its shape has always stayed the same, except in one instance. According to the Bangor Daily News, in 2013, the famed gumdrop candy elevated itself to a whole new level of divinity when a couple from Maine found a misshapen Dot in the box, and its new profile looked like the Virgin Mary! As a joke, they put it up for auction on eBay, and it sold for over $300!
