History of Sixlets

Originally created by a company called Leaf Brands, these small, round, colorful treats have a somewhat elusive history. Said to have first debuted around 1960, Sixlets Candy once came in a cellophane wrapper containing eight pieces. The U.S. division of Leaf Brands was eventually sold to the Hershey Candy Company in 1996, but that’s not where this sweet’s journey ended. Through another transaction, the rights to these tasty snacks were sold to SweetWorks Confections, a New York based company. Though this classic treat has moved around a bit, it’s held onto what matters most – its flavor, vibrancy, and chocolatey goodness.

Sixlets Fun Facts

Where does the Sixlets name come from? Did it come from the number of candies in the original package? Was it created by someone who had six kids? While it’s possible their creators had an affinity for the number 6, it’s not clear what the true reasoning behind the “Sixlets” name is. Though there was a 6-piece version created in 2017, the original penny candy came in cellophane wrappers containing eight pieces. Leaf Brands, the candy’s first manufacturer, also created another brand called “Fivesomes,” which were more comparable to miniature Whoppers. Whatever the backstory, these sweets are fun to eat!
