Ferrara Candy Company
Ferrara is an American candy manufacturer initially based in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois, that produces some of the most well-known and highly popular confections in the world. This confectionery powerhouse rose to its now-legendary status from meager beginnings, when an immigrant named Salvatore crossed the Atlantic and opened a bakery in the heart of Chicago’s “Little Italy” in 1908. His first candies were traditional sweets known as “confetti,” which are candy-coated almonds often doled out at Italian weddings. When the sweet confections he created began to outsell his pastries, Salvatore quickly brought in two family members and started a production line devoted to panned candies. After a 2012 merger of the Ferrara Candy Company with Minnesota-based Farley’s & Sathers Candy Company, the company was renamed Ferrara and now bases all operations out of its world headquarters in Chicago.
The acquisitions didn’t stop there, as this company recently gained the responsibility of handling Nestle’s former line of candies, including Butterfinger, Nestle Crunch, Baby Ruth, fruit chewy Laffy Taffy, and the colorful, sweet and tangy Spree. Some of the other cherished treats produced by this innovative candy maker include tangy and crunchy Nerds candy, sweetly sour Lemonheads, blazing hot Atomic Fireballs, the sugar-coated peanut candy known as Boston Baked Beans, as well as Chuckles, the jelly candies coated with a thin layer of sugar. Cutting edge in both production and innovation, Ferrara Candy operates five manufacturing plants in the United States and Mexico, as well as several American distribution centers.
