The History of Airheads

What are sugar-coated rainbows of playfully chewy, sweet and sour delights wrapped in an equally fun package? What is so “out of control” delicious that the mere sight of their iconic wrapper sends both kids and adults into a flavor-craving frenzy? They are Airheads, and we love them! Our love for this icon in fruity flavors has impacted an entire generation of candy consumers, and made Airheads a household name, but how did this wonderment from the confectionery world come to be?

An “Airhead” is Born

Produced by the Dutch/Italian company Perfetti Van Melle located in Erlanger, Kentucky, the birth of this tangy, taffy-like candy began with its conception in the 1980s, when the Van Melle company and their Director of Marketing, Steve Bruner, started working on a new soft, flat, fruit chewy candy product.

After much deliberation and market testing, Van Melle produced a limited run of these colorful new fruit candy bars, and following successful sample testing with the public, the company needed to come up with a name that would be an instant hit. Bruner, who knew that it took years for a candy brand name to become memorable unless it was already a commonly used word, began asking his sons what slang terminology was popular among their age group for “a person that does something silly.” The one term that stood out was “airhead,” and the rest, as they say, is history. Van Melle was acquired by Perfetti Spa in March 2001 and continues to produce this pop-culture driven iconic candy. The company employs 17.7 thousand people worldwide, has 38 operating companies, 31 manufacturing facilities, and boasts $3 billion in worldwide sales.

The Marketing Department of Perfetti Van Melle was recognized as one of the 2017 Ad Age Best Places to Work and also received a similar accolade called the MANNY Award from Cincy Magazine in 2017. They are also consistently among the Top Five for the National Confectioners Associations (NCA) Sweets and Snacks Most Innovative New Products in the non-chocolate, mints, and gum category.

Airheads in Advertising

The Airheads advertising campaign has been a successful one, with the candy featured on children’s programming networks like Fox Kids and Nickelodeon. When the Nickelodeon-inspired “Green Slime” Airheads flavor was released to the consumer market in 2003, ads featured the television network’s logo, which resulted in an immediate increase in the candy’s popularity.

The iconic smiling balloon face character on Airheads wrappers, created by Bruner, has also remained popular throughout the decades. Commercials featuring teens uttering the words, “wanna play?” and then eating Airheads, causing their heads to inflate like a balloon and engaging in a game of “bumper heads,” are still going strong in television and cable advertising platforms.

Distribution of Airheads

These soft and sweet, chewy and sour candies were initially available everywhere in Canada and the United States, and in 2015, began their “British invasion” into the United Kingdom. Airheads and Airheads Xtremes are manufactured in the USA at Perfetti’s headquarters located in Erlanger, KY, and are available in stores, as well as online at bulk candy retailers like Candy Warehouse.

Airheads Flavor Lineup

The colors of Airheads candy are beyond the spectrum of a rainbow, and that is also true of the flavors. From simple to extreme, these melt-in-your-mouth, fabulously fruity candies come in every taste imaginable.

Airheads are available in the more commonly known tastes of Cherry (red,) Blue Raspberry (blue,) Watermelon (green,) Green Apple (light green,) Strawberry (dark pink,) Lemon (yellow,) Orange (orange,) Fruit Punch (red,) and Grape (purple,) as well as the out of control variations of Blue Raspberry-Cherry (blue and red striped,) White Mystery (white,) Mango-Chile (orange with red dots,) Strawberry-Watermelon (green and dark pink striped,) Pink Lemonade (pink,) Double Mystery (2 random colors striped,) Strawberry Kiwi (light green,) Cotton Candy (light blue,) and Cotton Candy Bubble Gum (light pink.)

For candy flavor extremists, the wild flavors of Chocolate (dark brown) and Birthday Cake (white with colored sprinkles) are also on the list. There are even Maple flavored Airheads available in Canada, and special edition tastes such as Special Edition White Mystery (white) and Special Edition Burnt Rubber (dark black.)

Other flavor varieties include the semi-sour Airheads Extremes in belts and bites, heat producing BerryHot, super sour Airheads Extremes Sourfuls, and Chillin flavor which has a hint of mint. However, some of these variations are limited editions that flow in and out of the marketplace.

The candy has a few different forms to choose from as well, including original bar form, mini-sized Airheads Bites, gummies, sugar-free gum with micro-candies inside, Airheads Soft Filled Bites, and Airheads Pops, which are lollipops in apple, blue raspberry, strawberry, cherry, watermelon, grape, strawberry kiwi, and berry.

For those on special diets or need candy that follows tradition, Airheads are certified Kosher, are peanut and tree nut free, as well as gluten-free.

Love Airheads? Here are Similar Candy Brands to Try

Other candy brands that are comparable to Airheads are Bit-O-Honey, Abba-Zaba, and Laffy Taffy. Bit-O-Honey is a true classic made of honey-flavored taffy blended with bits of almonds, Abba-Zaba is an old fashioned favorite consisting of chewy white taffy with rich, creamy peanut butter filling in the center, and Laffy Taffy is Willy Wonka’s smoothly chewy and super-fruity version of this taffy-like confection.

Airheads have a “cool” factor that has stood the test of time as well as a vast and loyal fanbase. Even after over 30 years, Airheads are still the go-to candy for little kids, big kids, and adults. With Perfetti Van Melle’s cutting-edge flavor reinventions continually rolling off the production line, and engaging ad campaigns streaming across television, cable, satellite, and the web, Airheads will continue to be the first thing that comes to mind when someone says, “wanna play?”
