Formed in 1970 Ohio, the funk band Wild Cherry picked up its name while lead singer and guitarist Rob Parissi was in a hospital trying to soothe a sore throat with a fruit-flavored box of cough drops. After making several records in an era when rock music ruled the airwaves, Parissi became disillusioned with the industry and took a job as a manager of a local steakhouse and the band dissolved. Realizing he had made a mistake and that playing funk music that no one listened to trumped grilling T-Bones on any day of the week, Parissi resurrected Wild Cherry with a brand new line-up of members. The freshly formed quartet began gigging like crazy, and at one important event in Pittsburgh a table full of fans continuously cajoled the band while they set up with shouts of "Are you white boys gonna play some funky music?" Knowing good lyrics when he heard them, Parissi borrowed a pen and a drink order pad and scribbled out the words and notes that would eventually become the 73rd biggest song of all time on Billboard's list of top 100 songs: "Play that Funky Music."
