In Japan, it used to be (and sometimes still is) considered taboo to remove food from one’s mouth. So in the 1930s, Taichiro Morinaga decided to embark upon a confectionery mission to create a culturally acceptable chewing gum snack that could be ingested like any regular food, instead of being spit out as normal gum would be.
An inspired candy-maker, Morinaga was already known for his outstanding caramel, which was often praised for its unique, creamy and chewy texture. One day, in a flurry of inspiration, he decided to combine his original caramel treat with natural strawberry flavor, and in 1931, "Chewlets" were born!
Unfortunately, after the destruction caused by World War 2, Morinaga had to start from scratch and rebuild his candy shop from the ground up. It wasn’t until 1975 that the treat was finally recreated, and this time around it was renamed HI-CHEW. Since then, Hi-CHEW has become a cultural icon in Japan, and over 113 different flavors of the uniquely chewy treat have been invented within the past few decades. This fun assorted pack contains four of the fruitiest favorites (including the original strawberry!). For a taste of the happily unexpected, try HI-CHEW!
