Lemonhead sour candies were created by the Ferrara Candy Company in 1962 after Salvatore Ferrara noticed how misshapen his grandson’s head was after birth. An Italian immigrant who came to this country in 1900, Ferrara subsequently opened a bakery in Chicago’s Little Italy and sold candy-coated almonds known as “confetti.” When these popular candies began to outsell pastries, he joined forces with family members to shift gears into panned candy production. Ferrara Pan Candy Company merged in 2012 with Farley’s & Sathers Candy Company and formed Ferrero Group. The company is the largest manufacturer of candy canes, sells the most conversation heart candies, and currently produces 92% of all mallowcremes in the U.S.
