As the children got older, they would begin to request their due as well, and thus would be given a few coins to keep for themselves.

The tradition of chocolate gelt was created in the 20th century by American chocolatiers, probably after giving much consideration to that age-old question, "What might kids spend their hard-earned Chanukah money on?" Well, candy, of course! So the innovative chocolatiers decided to help them skip a step and went straight to creating coins made out of chocolate.

These milk chocolate coins are wrapped in decorative, embossed foil, and they’re perfect for games of drediel. Plus, if you get hungry in the midst of a fierce competition, they double as a delicious, chocolaty snack!
