The Christmas Candy Canes Fashion Show Lydia Larsfield had always been the “shy” type. When other kids at school talked to her, she turned bright red and found herself completely unable to speak. This had major setbacks: she had once ran out of math class after being asked a simple multiplication tables question, and had nearly ruined her twelfth birthday party after trying to escape the singing of “happy birthday”. Knocking the cake over was bad enough; the fact that it had fallen on the ever-popular Jennifer O’Jones was, well, the icing on the cake. Jennifer had taken the cake incident very personally, and had never forgotten it. She gave Lydia the evil eye every time she passed by her in the hall. This did not help with Lydia's shyness. So when the sign-up sheet for the Christmas Fashion Show went around, everyone was pretty surprised when shy Lydia signed it. The annual Christmas Fashion Show was one of the most fun events of the year, with guys and gals showing off their most chic holiday ensembles. All the ticket profits went to charity, and everyone in the show became a mini-celebrity for a week. Lydia had a secret weapon ready when she signed up for the show: a gorgeous red-and-white striped cashmere dress her grandmother had given her last year for Christmas. She had been reading a new book (also a gift form her grandmother) entitled “How Not to Be Shy”. She was determined: this fashion show would be her debut as the no-longer-shy Lydia. But on Fashion Show night, amongst the camera flashes and cheering from the crowds, she captured a scary sight: Jennifer O’Jones in the same exact cashmere dress. She was about to have a semi-panic attack when her grandmother came up to her carrying a large red box. “Everyone loves a candy cane!” she said with a wink. Lydia thanked her, took a deep breath, and walked over to Jennifer. “Jennifer?” Jennifer turned around and, upon seeing Lydia’s dress, gasped. “I know. Listen, I know you don’t like me because I spilled cake on you when I was twelve, but since we’re wearing the same exact dress and everything, I thought you might want to walk down the runway together?” Jennifer smiled but didn’t say anything. “I have candy canes.” Lydia presented the red box. Jennifer, after eying the yummy candy cane sweets said, “Ok. Sounds good. Oh, and sorry I made such a big deal about the cake thing.” “No problem.” And so they walked down the runway like true stars, throwing colorful candy canes to their rows of screaming fans. It was quite a debut, indeed. | ![]() | ||||||||
