One hundred years have passed since 23-year-old Pennsylvanian pharmacist apprentice David Strickler went out on a sundae limb and put a never-before-heard-of ice cream dessert known as the banana split on his soda fountain menu. A little more than 50 years later, Strickler's American ice cream dream had skyrocketed in popularity--even Louis Prima celebrated his sweet genius when he sang, "Dispenser man, if you please, serve my chick a mess of calories/Banana Split for My Baby, a glass of plain water for me." The original creation called for single scoops of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice creams to be drizzled with sweet sauces of pineapple, hot fudge and strawberry as they floated atop a raft of a ripe banana sliced in half lengthwise. It's true that countless variations of this classic recipe are treasured worldwide, and the most common practice is to top the sundae treat with a maraschino cherry lodged on a generous dollop of whipped cream sprinkled with chopped nuts. Sweet perfection!
While this deliciously messy dessert tradition is considered a well-worth-it labor of love for most sweet tooths, sometimes you just need to cure your craving with a little less culinary stress. Enter this inspired ice cream confection Dippin' Dots Banana Split Candy. When eaten as one mouthful, happy bite-size balls in brown, off-white, pink, and yellow deliver all the flavors of creamy chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and banana that tastes just like one heaping spoonful of an old-fashioned banana split.
